Defending champion West Indies on Thursday defeated South Africa by 31 runs to secure the top spot in Group A in the ICC Women's World T20 2018 at St Lucia. The Caribbean bowlers defended their 107 runs against the Proteas and edged England with one point in the group.

In the low-scoring match, the South African captain Dan Van Niekerk won the toss and chose to field first. Wicket-keeper Kycia Knight was the top scorer for West Indies with 32 from 36 balls, while Natasha McLean made 28 out of 24. Fast bowler Shabnim Ismail took 3 wickets for 12 runs for South Africa.

In the second inning, the Proteas started with dynamic performance, chasing a target of 108. After the early dismiss of Wolvaardt, they maintain a staggering 48 for one. However, the West Indian women did a great job at bowling and fielding to bowl out South Africa for 76 runs in 18.4 overs. The visitors were stunned as they could only make 28 runs with nine wickets.

West Indies captain and star of the match, Stefanie Taylor spun all her way to a career-best T20 figure of 4/12 from 3.4 overs.

With this win, the Windies registered their second successive matches out of two. The Caribbean women play Sri Lanka, while the Proteas take on England in their next games.
