After being left-out from Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2017, Gautam Gambhir has now been released from Delhi Daredevils as well following a poor-run-of form in the season 11. The left-handed batsman hasn’t got a chance to play an International match since 2013 as the franchise owners are only left with the runs he scores in domestic cricket to analyze his performance.
Considering the patchy-run in the last year’s IPL and a moderate run in domestic cricket, Gambhir’s IPL career isn’t looking any brighter. Having been released from Delhi and Kolkata, perhaps, no other franchise is currently seeking a skipper to lead in the upcoming season.
Until the last season, Gauti had been splendid in almost all the IPLs, winning two titles for Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the 31-year-old batsman might be wary of going unsold this year and, perhaps, calling it a day from the cash-rich league.
Post the exclusion of Gambhir and Yuvraj from their respective teams, former chief selector Sandeep Patil also explained in his column for The Quint, that he would have also dropped them from the team had he been of the owner of the franchise.
"Yuvraj and Gautam have been my favorite players and remain my favorite, but as a franchise owner, if I have to take a call on them being part of my team, I would also have dropped them," he said.
“Gambhir led KKR respectfully and won two IPL titles for them. But age is something which not only catches up with players but also slows down the player, affecting their performance. I don’t have to name the players, but it has happened to cricketers in the past and will continue to happen in the future as well," Patil wrote explaining why he felt it was right on Delhi Daredevils' part to let go of Gambhir. “
Now the question that arises: Which Franchise Will Buy Gautam Gambhir?
While there is a very less chance that Kolkata would bring their skipper back into the side, franchises such as Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai seem unlikely to opt for Gauti as an additional opener.
Kings XI Punjab led by R. Ashwin might be pocking the left-hander, keeping in mind that Australian players won’t be playing the entire IPL looking ahead at the World Cup next year.
Also, Sunrises Hyderabad which has released eight players and Shikhar Dhawan being traded with Delhi Daredevils, David Warner's side might pick Gambhir to fill the other opener's shoes along with Warner.
Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see what fate decides for Gautam Gambhir ahead of the IPL 2018.
