In an exclusive interview with Sports Tak, Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir answered a lot of questions that everyone was dying to hear since long. Amidst the talks regarding IPL, World Cup 2007, 2011 etc, the left-handed batsman hits out at Dhoni’s selection criteria for World Cup 2011.
Gautam Gambhir didn’t support Dhoni’s decision to not play Sachin, Sehwag, and Gambhir himself together in the World Cup 2015, owing to their fielding standards and keeping in mind bigger grounds in Australia.
The decision had perhaps come as a shock to Gambhir who couldn’t digest such statements, reasoning that the former skipper can’t make a team for the World Cup that is going to be held after three years.
“In the 2012 Tri-series in Australia, Dhoni declared that he
can't play all three (Gambhir, Sachin, and Sehwag) of us
together as he was looking ahead at the 2015 World Cup,”
Gambhir told Sports Tak.
"It was a massive shock; I think it would have been a massive
shock for any cricketer. I have not heard anyone be told in 2012
that they would never be a part of the 2015 World Cup. I always
had the impression that if you keep scoring runs, age is a just a
number," he added.
"If you have the skills to score the runs and you are not a liability
on the field, you can go on to play as long as you want. This was
always told to us and even in Australia we got to know that all the
three can't play together, and we eventually got to play together.”
However, when asked if that decision had affected his relationship with MS Dhoni, Gambhir rubbished all such reports saying that everyone has different opinions and the MS’s decision to prefer fielding skills over batting prowess has never hampered his relationship with the Chennai Super Kings’ skipper.
“Absolutely not, differences in opinions are everywhere, everyone has
different opinions and if there would same opinions shared by everyone
then there is no scope for growth. In the end, what matters
is to make your Country proud,” He said.
“And I think MS and I have actually spent the most precious number of
moments together, be it, T-20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, Asia Cup,
CB Series, New Zealand Test series etc,” he added.
