Rookie Luka Doncic scored an astonishing 28 points as the Dallas Mavericks came back from behind to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 102-101 on Sunday night. The-19-year-old Slovenian added five points in the decisive final 2:27 at the American Airlines Center.
Doncic added a nerve cracking 13 points in the fourth quarter when the Mavericks trailed 96-81 with 10:43 to play. The Trail Blazers had maintained the lead with Damian Lillard's 21 points which came in the final 5:19 of the previous quarter.
Lillard added a total of 30 points, five assist and three rebounds in his 36-minute appearance, while Jusuf Nurkić made 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The hosts tied the game at 97 and pulled up to 99-97 thanks to Doncic’s flash scoring.
Timothy Hardaway Jr, who has just arrived from the New York Knicks, scored 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Dwight Powell added 13 points, while Dorian Finney-Smith scored 11 and six rebounds.
Trail Blazers lost when they have led after three quarters for the first time in 34 games this season.
The Mavericks have improved to 26-29, while the Trail Blazers remained in the fourth place with 33-22 in the Western Conference.
Portland host Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday. The Mavericks will travel to Houston to face the Rockets on Tuesday.
