Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap on Tuesday entered the second round of the Hong Kong Open badminton tournament after defeating Hsu Jen-hao of Taiwan in the men's singles event at Hong Kong Coliseum. The 32-year-old took an hour to seal 21-7, 12-21, 21-18 in a thrilling opening game.
Kashyap notched 54 rallies with 11 consecutive points, while the Taiwanese counterpart could only make 46 with six consecutive points. The Commonwealth Games gold-medalist will now face 7th seeded Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia in the second round.
In the mixed double match, the Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Taiwanese pair of Wang Chi-lin and Lee Chia-Hsin 21-16, 19-21, 21-14 in the opening round. The duo made a comfortable start at the first game, but their opponent edge passed the in the second game.
The Indian pair came back with a gripping turnaround and won the third game, accumulating a 2-1 win. They will play against Lee Yang and Hsu Ya Ching, another Taiwanese pair, in the second round.
Rankireddy along with Chirag Shetty will meet Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the men's doubles event on Wednesday.
