Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari led Palmeiras won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title for the tenth time on Sunday after beating Vasco de Gama 1-0. Forward Deyverson scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute, propelling the club to acquire77 points, 5 points ahead of its closest rivals Flamengo in the table.
With this win, the former Brazil and Chelsea coach added another feather in his cap at the age of 70. It is the second title in three years for the Sao Paulo-based club.
Scolari, who was with 2002 World Cup winning Brazilian team and took Portugal to the final of UEFA Euro 2004, took over the coach job for Palmeiras in July. The squad was struggling in the seventh, trail by eight points behind the leaders.
The veteran coach won his first trophy in Brazil since his national side suffered the humiliation of a 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals of 2014 World Cup on home ground. He had a stint with Guangzhou Evergrande in China.
Scolari guided Guangzhou to win three consecutive Chinese Super League titles from 2015 to 2017. The Brazilian Felipão has led Palmeiras in its 22-game unbeaten streak.
