Tottenham Hotspurs kept their hope alive for the knockout stage of UEFA Champions League as substitute Christian Eriksen scored to secure a late 1-0 winner against Inter Milan at Wembley. The north Londoners had to win the game after they started with poor form this season, facing a near elimination at the group stage.
It was another dramatic win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they put all their weights to score the lone goal just 10 minutes away from being eliminated. The victory revived their hope for a berth in the round of 16.
The much labored Eriksen’s 80th-minute goal came as a blessing for the Spurs, who were held 2-2 by PSV Eindhoven in October. However, they fought back to beat the Dutch top division 2-1 with two late goals from Harry Kane in their second meet at Wembley earlier this month.
Inter Milan, the three-time European winner, have been struggling throughout the season, sitting at the bottom of Group B with just one point.
The Spurs still have one more tough game against the tournament’s most favorite Barcelona on Tuesday, 11 December to earn a berth in the last 16. The Spanish heavy hitters who are already qualified for the knockout stage wrapped up PSV’s campaign with a 2-1 win at the Philips Stadion.
Superstar Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique notched one goal each to maintain their position with a comfortable 13-point top spot in Group B. Tottenham climbed up to no 2 spot with seven points ahead of Inter Milan on goal difference.
