A few minutes after Manchester United sacked manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday, midfielder Paul Pogba posted a controversial message on Instagram.
In a photo, the 25-year-old Frenchman stared sideways to his left with a smirk on his face. The post was captioned with “Caption This!” and included the hashtags #mufc, #manutd, and #heretocreate, the slogan for the Adidas marketing campaign.
So far there is no explanation whether his pose in the photo was deliberate or a bad timing click for the Adidas photoshoot. However, the post was taken down after online for only a few minutes.
Many have speculated that the social media post was his reaction to Mourinho’s departure from Old Trafford.
Pogba was transferred to United from Juventus with a world record £89m in the summer transfer window of 2016. Following a falling-out with Mourinho this season, the France international, who won the World Cup, has been sidelined from United matches.
He was stripped of the vice captaincy for criticizing the tactics after a 1-1 draw against Wolves in September. There was also a viral video in which the coach and the athlete exchanged words on the training ground.
United were limping at sixth place in the Premier League table, trailing behind the leader Liverpool with a wide gap of 19 points.
Earlier this day, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made the call to sack Mourinho. The Portuguese coach joined the club in 2016 and won the Europa League and League Cup in his first season. The three-year contract was extended till June 2010 following a dazzling start to the 2017/18 season.
