It was a sweet revenge for Tottenham Hotspurs as they earned a comprehensive 2-0 victory against the bitter rivals Gunners in the second north London derby on Wednesday and reached the Carabao Cup semi final. Son Heung-min and Dele Alli scored in either of the half time, setting Emirates Stadium on fire and qualified for the last four for the first time since 2014-15.
It was a couple of weeks ago when the Gunners defeated the Spurs 4-2 in the Premier League on the same ground.
Son opened the scoring in the 20th minute from a long pass from Alli, a rally through four Arsenal defenders in the middle. But the best show of the night came in the 59th minute when Alli himself chipped it a beautiful volley over Petr Cech with his foot tips.
Alli paid the painful price for his achievement in the 73rd minute. He was struck on the back of the head with a plastic bottle thrown from Gooners. The 22-year-old England professional turned around and gave a 2-0 gesture, referring to the scoreline.
It was the second fan attack incident in the north London derby after the throwing of banana skin at Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by a Spurs fan in their previous face-off.
Spurs will play Chelsea, who beat Bournemouth 1-0 with the substitute Eden Hazard’s 84th minute winner. In the other semifinal match, 2018 winners Manchester City will face League One side Burton Albion.
