Rafael Benitez’s men scored two goals in extra time to overcome Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday to book a place in the FA Cup fourth round. Besides the late winners, Newcastle also scored one of the earliest goals in the tournament as they fought hard to seal a 4-2 victory at Ewood Park.
Newcastle drew the first blood in the very opening minute when Sean Longstaff struck with a deflected shot. The goal was the third fastest in the FA Cup this season.
Callum Roberts added the second goal in the 22nd minute when he sent a beautiful volley into the net from a Jacob Murphy’s cross making a 2-0 lead.
The hosts responded with a goal in the 33rd minute when a from Danny Graham's pass was chipped over Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman by Adam Armstrong. They went on to equalize the score in the first-half injury time with Darragh Lenihan’s header form a Lewis Travis’ corner kick.
The second-half session was barren as both sides failed to score a goal in the given 90-minute slot, which let it to the extension of the time.
The visitors made a 3-2 lead when Mato Joselu, who was appeared to be slightly offside from his position, struck in the 105+2nd minute. Nevertheless, the would-be controversial goal was swept under the rug as Ayoze Perez paced up for a powerful strike within a minute to seal a 4-2 win.
It was the first time for the men in black & white shirts to score four goals in an FA Cup game since 2008.
