A red card ended Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi’s dream of breaking Javier Zanetti's record of 162 consecutive Serie A appearances in 2-1 defeat in Naples. The 30-year-old was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Jose Callejon in the 70th minute.

Acerbi, who made his 149th league game appearance in Naples, has been suspended for the next game against leaders Juventus. He was featured in every one game in all competitions since October 18, 2015 when he was with Sassuolo. He had been aiming to break former midfielder Zanetti, who played for Inter Milan between 1995 and 2014.

“I apologize for leaving my companions with 10 men at such a difficult time of the match. The 149 consecutive games played to date must be the starting point to start from,” Acerbi tweeted.

The first-half was dominated by the home team, leading the game 2-0 with José Callejón’s 34th-minute opener and Arkadiusz Milik’s stunning free kick in the next three minutes.

Ciro Immobile's struck in the 65th minute to give some hope for the visitors but they couldn’t go further after the dismissal of Acerbi.

Napoli remained in the second spot with 47 points from 20 games, six behind Juventus, while Lazio are in the fifth place on 32 points.
