Russia’s every growing star Karen Khachanov caused the most dramatic upset of the year as he beats Novak Djokovic on Sunday to claim Paris Masters crown for the first time in his career. The victory marks the end of a spell of dominance from Djokovic. Russia’s tennis star ends Djokovic’s 22-game winning streak on Sunday after beating World’s number two 7-5, 6-4 in the Paris Masters final.
Karen Khachanov’s triumph saw 22-year old Russian jumping to a career-high 11th place from 18th in the world. Moreover, Paris masters also gave Karen third title this year.
To finish my season like this is a dream. Maybe I'm not crying, but still I'm really happy," he told reporters post-match.
Earlier Djokovic beat Roger Federer 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 in an epic semi-final which lasted over three hours.
The Serb tennis ace was clearly struggling in the game who himself admitted that he had not recovered post his enthralling semi-final contest against Federer. The World’s number one tennis player said nothing but praised the Russian tennis star on Sunday.
"All credit to Karen, he did a great job today. He deserves the trophy. I'm sure we'll see a lot of great games from him in the future," said Djokovic after the match.
