Alex de Minaur overcame compatriot Jordan Thompson 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the quarter-final match to advance to the semis at the Sydney International on Thursday. He made a breakthrough after Thompson led 4-1 in the first set tiebreaker.

De Minaur was leading the game when Thompson leveled the score 4-4 at the eight game point in the first set. But the 19-year-old, who jumped from 208th to 29th place in the 30 ATP ranking, finished the set with Thompson’s unforced error.

In the second set, de Minaur swept the points in a comfortable manner except in the fifth game that was played longer with both players refused to give up.

De Minaur, who was named ATP’s Newcomer of the Year 2018, had also defeated 24-year-old Thompson 4-6, 2-6 in Brisbane International last week. He will play either Australian John Millman or Frenchman Gilles Simon in the semi-final.

Earlier in the day, Italian ace Andreas Seppi defeated top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 to book a semi-final berth.
